Merida and Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

We went to Merida leading up to the Dia de los Muertos, where they have many celebrations. This was the Paseo de los Animas (Walk of the Spirits - remember the start to the James Bond film Spectre). The costumes were amazing, as you can see from the pics, but also the music and smells of food and burning incense. Dee was inspired to do a sketch!

We also saw a reinactment of a Mayan ball game. All the Mayan ruins that we have visited so far have had a ball court so it was interesting to see how they think it was played. They use a solid rubber ball and try to get it through the stone hoops, however, they can't use their hands so they use their hips instead!

Many miniature Mayan houses were built along the route of the procession to house an altar to commemorate the dead.

One for dogs too! :)

The AT tucked away in the front room of our lodgings!

Some pics in Merida.

We have also been to Progreso on the coast, visited by cruise ships, which has the longest pier in the world - 6.5 km!

It was here we met our funniest street seller so far, a man dressed up as a doctor with a stethoscope and offering to take our blood pressure!
