A beautiful road and another blockade

The road from Uyuni to Potosi is a lovely 200 km twisty tarmac road with more amazing scenery, lots of animals and virtually no traffic! Here are some pics:

A stop for lunch with hundreds of animals in the plain below...

After a few nights in Sucre we headed north but came across another blockade at Aiquile - our 3rd in 4 days of riding! The blockade had been in place for 2 days already! Some drivers set up hammocks under their lorries - its crazy. We followed two locals on a ped and were allowed through the roadblock into the town after weaving through rocks and moving some tyres. This pic was on the way to the roadblock, it was too dodgy to take a photo where all the protesters were.

To get out of town we had to get through another roadblock guarded by about 200 people. Initially we were advised not to try but then we were told about a railway line we could use to bypass it. We rode on the tracks for a short distance but were concerned we couldn't turn the bike around quickly if we were seen and things turned nasty.

Another local said we might be able to get through so we decided to go to the roadblock and see. There were a few whistles when we arrived but we talked to a couple of friendly old boys. One went away to speak to someone and then returned and said we could pass. The only way was to ride through an area of rocks used by peds, bicycles and people on foot. Dee walked in front and we managed to get the bike through and we were free again! This took us on the road to Misque and beyond towards Cochabamba via a combination of tarmac, sand, ripio and cobbles.

  1. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEENEY!
I hope Phil has a birthday treat in store for you (although who needs treats when you are having such an amazing time).
The scenery looks, as ever, spectacular. You must be overwhelmed by seeing such beautiful scenery all the time. It's easy to become used to it. I'm envious of all the blue skies and it always looks hot, which I'm sure it isn't. Bolivia looks like it might be very different to the other places you have been. Are you going to the scene of the Butch Cassidy shootout??

We have had Easter storms here and some of our roof tiles have blown off. More DIY in store. Thank you for taking the time to post all your photos, I'm enjoying my armchair tour of South America! Lots of love to you both. Sharon x

    1. Yes Sharon, it does overwhelm you! Bolivia is very different and we really like it here. Thanks for my birthday wishes, Phil bought me a nice necklace.
Glad to hear we are giving you a good armchair tour! Oh, we went near to the shootout but not to it.
      Enjoy the diy! Xx
