Alcobaca, Olives and Dinosaur tracks

We stopped in Alcobaca - a picturesque town -  on route to a night staying on an Olive Farm - a first for us! We actually camped between the rows of Olive trees, which was lovely.

We treated ourselves to breakfast delivered to Muy by the farm manager. Freshly squeezed orange juice, also from the farm, home made bread, home made jam, proper butter, olive oil, home made fruit cake - very nice! We then had a free private tour of their small factory where they press the olives for Virgin or Extra Virgin Oil. Oh and the sun came out at last!

We visited the Pegadas de Dinossáurios da Serra de Aire Natural Monument to see a series of Dinosaur footprints. The ancient sauropod tracks found in this former quarry are some of the longest in the world.

To give an idea of scale

The dinosaurs were walking on a mudflat and certain geological actions has set them in stone. The footprints are around 175 million years old. They had a track with information and viewpoints to follow which made for a good walk in the area.

This image from the leaflet shows the viewing
area and the footprints

Real life - the prints can be seen

Close up

Plenty of wild flowers for Dee to snap on our walk around, including the clever Bee Orchid.
