Meda and Ermo das Aguias nature reserve

We stayed at a half decent municipal campsite at Meda - rundown but with decent sized pitches and friendly staff, with electric and well priced.

There are so many derelict and empty houses for sale in these towns - people have probably departed to civilisation rather than these remote places.

Ermo das Aguias is another rewilding project. Beautiful location, loads of wildlife and only us there - perfect! The starting point for the walk was a remote hamlet which we drove to and parked up. The rewilding project even had an information centre - we popped in and were able to have a toastie and drink there too.

In the nature reserve we spotted lots of European Bee-eaters, a fox and plenty of other birds. We spotted one bird which we had no idea what it was - a red head and white body. After researching we discovered it could only be a Red Headed Woodpecker - but they only live in the US. We think it must have been blown across in the big storm. However, we later learnt that it could have been a Woodchat Shrike - still quite rare.

An old boy with a bad back!

We saw one of these rare birds
a Woodchat Shrike

We had a lovely time here, and when we returned to Muy, the baker turned up in his van so we got some tasty supplies from him!
